The Challenge

Falmec initially asked for a multi-screen filter inspired by a competitor, but research revealed a broader problem. Choosing the right hood or integrated hob required users to navigate a complex range of technologies, installation types, configurations, and models. The existing website offered product filters and detailed content, but users still needed considerable research to understand which solution matched their needs. The challenge was to simplify that complexity without removing the information users might need later.

The Solution

I reframed the request as a three-step Product Finder that guides users through product type, installation, and technology before presenting a tailored shortlist. Plain-language explanations surface only the information needed at each step, while a persistent stepper shows progress and summarizes previous choices. The experience was refined with the client, aligned with technical constraints, validated through QA, and launched to production. Featured on the homepage and supported by a dedicated SEO-optimized landing page, it also created clearer entry points into Falmec’s products and technologies.

The Process

Finding the problem behind the brief

The project began with a request for a multi-screen filter inspired by one of Falmec’s direct competitors. I translated the brief into business requirements, then worked with the developer to define the technical requirements and constraints imposed by the live website, infrastructure, and product database. Through competitor benchmarking, domain research, and an audit of Falmec’s existing experience, I also identified the UX and UI requirements for a guided Product Finder rather than a conventional filter.

Guiding without overloading

I designed a three-step flow around product type, installation, and technology. For the installation step, I explored adding a CTA that revealed compatible models and further information, but removed it because it introduced unnecessary complexity before users needed that level of detail. I regularly checked the design with the developer, refined it with the Design Lead and Web Experience Team Lead, and iterated further through client feedback and usability testing.

Taking the Product Finder live

After approval, the Product Finder was developed, tested (including a final round of QA), and deployed to production. It was then promoted from the homepage and supported by a dedicated SEO-optimized landing page, creating new entry points into Falmec’s products, technologies, and installation solutions.

The right solution wasnt a better filter, but a clearer path to the right product.

Wrapping up

This project reinforced that the best response to a client request is not always the feature they initially ask for. By looking beyond the filter and focusing on how people make a complex product decision, I learned to balance progressive disclosure, technical constraints, and business goals within a simpler guided experience. It also strengthened my approach to cross-functional design: involve development early, test what adds real value, and remove anything that slows users down.
